Selma began not with a musical score, but with a face. Working from a portrait of artist Selma Dronkers, Elizabeth drew a single contour line from her features — a line that became both a visual mark and, in a reversal of her usual practice, the basis for a melodic theme. Where her work typically translates music into colour, Selma runs the process the other way: a musical composition for Violin I, Violin II, Viola and Cello, built directly from a line drawn from life.
Selma will be the subject of a live demo, "A Line's Journey," on Friday 18 September, 5:00–5:30pm, as part of the Platforms Project art fair in Athens, 17–20 September.
